The Sanibel School

Island students of the Lee County School District attend The Sanibel School for grades kindergarten through eighth grade. A National Blue Ribbon Award winner, The Sanibel School boasts a fine curriculum enhanced by deep community involvement and an active PTA. Students participate in programs co-sponsored by the City of Sanibel, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, Sanibel Shell Club and National Junior Duck Stamp program, a program initiated by the school in cooperation with J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Its groundbreaking scholastic and environmental programs have gained recognition around the world.

Parents who work on the islands but live on the mainland may be eligible for a waver for their child to attend The Sanibel School

The Sanibel School enjoys a special relationship with the city's recreation department. New students who can't swim receive free swimming lessons in the city pool during school hours. The city and the school share a playground built by the community. Sanibel Recreation runs summer camp for a nominal fee and free after-school programs.

High School

High school students ride a bus to Fort Myers to attend district neighborhood or magnet schools, which specialize in various disciplines, from languages to fine arts. Students have a choice of schools within their immediate geographical area; a lottery system is used to decide who attends magnet and other most-requested schools. Students can also attend a variety of private schools off island.
In the primary and secondary public school system, parents may register a new student at the school the child will attend. To make an appointment and learn the requirements to register at The Sanibel School, call (239) 472-1617. For information on school assignments, call the Lee County School District Boundaries and Reassignment office at (239) 337-8248.

Florida Gulf Coast University

The new kid on the block, Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), opened in 1997. It's the state's 10th and newest university to come on line. Located just south of Fort Myers, FGCU brings an exciting approach and curriculum to students who once had to travel great distances for many degree programs. FGCU's four colleges include the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Health Professions and College of Professional Studies (education, criminal justice, social work and public administration).
